The researchers found that word usage was mostly stable from 2013 to 2019, with no word increasing in frequency by more than 1%. This changed in 2020 when words like "sars," "coronavirus," "pandemic," and "severe" increased a lot. Covid-related words stayed high until 2022.
By early 2024, about a year after tools like ChatGPT became popular, a new set of words became common. Out of the 774 words that increased significantly between 2013 and 2024, 329 became common in the first three months of 2024.
Most of these words, about 280, were related to writing style, not subject matter. Some examples are "delve," "potential," "intricate,", etc.
