AI CHART
We’re in mid-September, but strawberry season is just beginning. OpenAI has finally launched its rumored "strawberry" model - The o1 series.
OpenAI says that their new o1 and o1-mini models can handle more complex tasks in science, coding, and math than earlier models. These models rank in the 89th percentile on programming challenges (Codeforces), place among the top 500 in a USA Math Olympiad qualifier (AIME), and even surpass human PhD-level accuracy in physics, biology, and chemistry tests (GPQA).
What are the cons?: The model is a bit slow, as OpenAI says it takes longer to respond to prompts. It’s missing some features that GPT-4o has, like web browsing and file uploads, but these will be added in future updates.
Why it’s slow?: OpenAI uses a big reinforcement learning method to help the model think better by following its thought process. So it will take more time to think.
Pricing Update: Developers will pay $15 for every 1 million input tokens and $60 for every 1 million output tokens through the API to use o1. The higher cost is because o1 is designed for solving more complex problems - like paying for top-tier AI.
Why It Matters: o1 isn’t just for creating text—it’s built to think and reason. This model helps AI tackle more complex problems, opening up new possibilities for innovation across different industries.
