🌐 AI Jobs Are Growing Fast, But Progress for Women Is Slow

ai-jobs-growing-fast-women-progress-slow

LinkedIn's 2023 data, published on OECD.AI, offers key insights into the evolving AI job landscape and gender representation in AI roles.

Key takeaways:

  • LinkedIn shows a 323% increase in AI-related hiring over the last eight years.

  • 75% of global knowledge workers now incorporate AI into their work routines, streamlining tasks and boosting creativity.

  • Women now comprise 26.8% of AI engineering talent, marking slow but steady progress since 2016.

  • AI job applications have grown 17% more for roles mentioning AI compared to those without.

  • New AI classifications distinguish between AI Engineering (technical) and AI Literacy (tools like ChatGPT).

Why it matters: The rising need for AI skills shows the important AI is becoming in many jobs. While fewer women work in AI, some progress is happening, especially in education. More people are switching to AI careers, making it important to offer training and learning programs to fill the growing talent gaps across industries.

AI CHART

Government’s challenges with scaling gen AI

Two factors may be contributing to government’s challenges in scaling gen AI this time around:

→ Lack of expertise, which can make choosing the right technology difficult

→ Difficulty measuring mission value from gen AI

The less trodden path to scaling generative AI → Take a unique bottom-up approach

Unlike commercial organizations that scale AI top-down through leadership-driven strategies, governments may benefit by empowering employees with access to AI tools. This allows for experimentation and discovery of use cases that align with government missions, even without direct financial incentives for leaders.

The real benefit of the bottom-up approach is that it gives practical steps to help scale generative AI in the unique situations government organizations face.

  • Expand access to gen AI with safeguards
Less than 40% of government workers have access to gen AI. Providing wider access to approved tools with safety limits allows experimentation while managing risks.

  • Build skills and expertise
Success requires knowing how to use the technology. Governments can train their teams or collaborate with experts from other sectors to boost their knowledge.

  • Focus on measurable goals
Gen AI can deliver public benefits, but to secure future funding, clear mission goals and measurable outcomes are necessary.
