🤖 Nvidia Compute Is Doubling Every 10 Months
The NVIDIA A100 has been the workhorse of AI training, powering 65 of the most notable models in the industry. But its reign might be coming to an end.
By late 2023, the H100 had already outsold the A100, positioning it as the next dominant GPU for training AI models. And with NVIDIA’s compute power growing 2.3x per year since 2019, bigger, more advanced models are coming faster than ever.
Breaking Down the GPU Race
A100: The most widely used AI training GPU—until now.
V100: A close second, used in 55 models.
TPU v3: Google’s challenger, powering 47 models.
H100: The rising star, now making up 77% of NVIDIA’s total AI compute power.
Why This Matters
🚀 Hopper (H100) is taking over. The latest NVIDIA AI chips dominate compute power, meaning older GPUs fall off fast—usually contributing less than 50% of total compute within four years of release.
🔍 TPUs? A wildcard. This analysis excludes Google’s TPUs and other AI accelerators, but some estimates suggest they could rival NVIDIA in total compute power.
💡 The mind-blowing part? NVIDIA’s total installed compute power is doubling every 10 months. That means in just 10 months, NVIDIA will produce more computing power than all of its previous GPUs combined. And then 10 months later, they’ll do it again.
At this rate, the A100's dominance looks like a momentary blip in AI history—and the real question is: How long before the H100 gets replaced, too?
