Introduction to Consistent AI Character Creation
Imagine you're a parent wanting to make fun, educational books for your kids. But there's a problem: you're not good at drawing. This dream seemed impossible, but now we have DALL-E 3 from OpenAI. This made you wonder, 'Can I make good book characters with DALL-E 3?' You love writing and teaching, and you know how kids learn. Plus, you're good with AI tools. Join us on this adventure as you try out DALL-E 3 to make your dream book come true.
The Seed
The term "seed" in the context of image generation, particularly when using AI tools like DALL-E 3, refers to a unique identifier used in the process of random number generation. In simpler terms, a seed is a starting point for the algorithm that generates the image.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Random Number Generators: Most AI image generation models use random number generators to create images. These generators need a starting number to begin the process, known as the 'seed'.
Reproducibility: The seed ensures reproducibility. If you use the same seed with the same settings and inputs, the random number generator will produce the same sequence of numbers, leading the AI to create the same image.
Uniqueness: Different seeds lead to different random number sequences, thus producing different images. This is why, when you don't specify a seed, the AI tool often generates a new, unique image each time.
In summary, a seed in image generation is like a recipe that, if followed exactly, will always produce the same dish. It's a crucial part of ensuring that AI-generated images can be unique but also reproducible if desired.
So, here's how DALL-E 3 works with seeds:
Use the same words and the same seed, and you'll get the same picture every time.
Change the words a bit but keep the seed the same, and the pictures will look similar.
Describe a character in detail, use the same seed, but change what the character is doing in each prompt. This way, the character will look the same in different actions.
How to Apply to Create Consistent Characters with Dall-E 3?
To show what I mean, I asked for four pictures that are pretty much the same.
I made sure to use the same 'seed' number for each one. Here's what I asked for:
"Picture of a happy cat with fluffy white fur, big green eyes, and a big grin, sitting."
"Picture of a happy cat with fluffy white fur, big green eyes, and a big grin, sleeping."
"Picture of a happy cat with fluffy white fur, big green eyes, and a big grin, jumping."
"Picture of a happy cat with fluffy white fur, big green eyes, and a big grin, playing."
Here's what I got:
Here's a tip: the more details you give, the less creative DALL-E 3 can be. In the last picture, I just said "playing" without saying what the cat is playing with. So, when I try different seeds or styles, the cat plays with different things.
Do the cats look exactly the same in each picture? No. But do they look alike? Yes!
Let's talk more about THE STYLE.
Understanding Styles in Image Generation
To make sure images look the same, you need to use the same style.
If you just describe something, like a character, DALL-E 3 might make it in different styles. But if you know which style to use, you can easily switch. Like with the cat pictures I made. All of them started with 'Picture'
What if I change 'Picture' to 'Anime'?
Hereβs what I got:
By simply altering the style, I managed to create four consistent and similar-looking cats!
It's incredibly handy to have this feature where you can easily continue the conversation and maintain consistency.

Another Way to Create Consistent Characters
Describe the Character
Write a description of the character you want to generate.
Example: "Create a picture of a friendly cat with orange fur and green eyes."
Obtain the Seed Number
Ask ChatGPT for the seed number of the image to use it in future prompts.
Input this seed number at the beginning of your prompt for consistency.
Create Different Scenes for the Character
Using the seed number, you can make the character do various activities in different settings.
Example: "Using the seed number, make the cat play with a ball of yarn in a sunny garden."
Experiment with Different Prompts
Try different prompts to make the character engage in various actions or scenarios.
Example: "Using the same seed number, make the cat chase a butterfly in a meadow."
Be prepared for the possibility that some results may not be perfect.
Conclusion
In conclusion, using DALL-E 3, you can create consistent characters for your kids' books, even if you're not good at drawing. Start by describing your character in detail. Sometimes the results might not be perfect, but this way, you can make a series of pictures where your character looks similar. This is a fun and easy way to create your own book characters using AI.
