🤖 Phi-4: Microsoft’s Small Model for Complex Reasoning
Phi-4, Microsoft's latest small language model (SLM), which has 14 billion parameters and is specialized in complex reasoning, particularly in mathematical problems.
Key takeaways:
Phi-4 excels at math-related reasoning, performing better than larger models like Gemini Pro 1.5 on math competition benchmarks.
Phi-4 is available on Azure AI Foundry under a Microsoft Research License Agreement (MSRLA), and also be available on Hugging Face the following week.
Phi-4 performs better than its teacher model, GPT-4o, on advanced STEM questions and math competition tasks.
Microsoft built Phi-4 mainly using synthetic data, where AI created and checked around 400 billion tokens of top-quality training content.
The model can also handle longer inputs, up to 4,000 tokens, which is twice the capacity of Phi-3.
Why it matters: Microsoft's Phi models prove that bigger isn’t always better in AI. These smaller models can perform as well as, or even better than, larger ones—especially in specific tasks. The future of AI might focus less on size and more on smarter design and efficient training to achieve better results with fewer resources.
