Question: Can a large language model (LLM) help doctors in family medicine, internal medicine, or emergency medicine make better diagnoses compared to usual tools?
Findings: In a study with 50 doctors, using an LLM didn’t show much improvement in diagnosis skills compared to traditional resources.
Performance:
The group using the LLM scored slightly better (76% vs. 74%) than the group using conventional resources, but the difference was not statistically significant.
The LLM alone performed significantly better than both groups, scoring 92% on average.
Time Efficiency:
Participants using the LLM completed cases slightly faster than those using traditional resources, but the time difference was not significant.
Impact of LLM:
While the LLM alone excelled, it did not significantly enhance physicians’ diagnostic reasoning when used as a supplementary tool.
Why it happens:
Doctors often dismissed ChatGPT’s correct diagnoses if they didn’t match their own. The question is how to make AI explain its reasoning and guide doctors without misleading them.
Many doctors lacked proper training in using AI and treated it like a basic search tool, instead of using it fully, like inputting the entire patient history and exploring the data.
Conclusion: LLMs like GPT-4 have great potential for helping with diagnoses, but they need to be improved before they can be fully useful in real-life medical work. Doctors also need training on how to use them effectively, work better with AI, and learn to trust, check, and make the most of their abilities.
