Teens and AI are getting cozy—ChatGPT is their new best friend for schoolwork. According to a Pew Research survey, 26% of U.S. teens (ages 13-17) now use ChatGPT to get their homework done. That’s double the 13% who said the same in 2023. Meanwhile, 73% of teens are still sticking to the old-school way (or maybe just haven’t tried it yet).
Who’s Using ChatGPT?
By Race: Black and Hispanic teens (31%) lead, compared to 22% of White teens.
By Grade: Upperclassmen (31%) use it most, while middle schoolers trail at 20%.
What’s It Used For?
Research: 54% say it’s fine.
Math Problems: Only 29% approve.
Essays: Just 18% support this use, with 42% against it.
Awareness is Key
79% of teens now know ChatGPT, up from 67% in 2023.
Teens familiar with it are 3x more likely to use it for schoolwork.
The Awareness Gap: By Income: Wealthier households know ChatGPT better (84%), but awareness grew fastest among lower-income teens (+26 points).
